The Ohio Sleep Medicine Institute (OSMI) is one of the first freestanding centers of sleep medicine created in the United States. Established in 1989, its mission has been dedicated to delivering the best quality in sleep medicine care. Founded by the late Helmut S. Schmidt, M.D., the institute emphasizes the importance of diagnosing, treating, and managing patients in the most thorough manner possible.

The Ohio Sleep Medicine Institute’s founding clinic in Dublin has been accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (previously the American Sleep Disorders Association) for 20 years and has developed its own trademark program as a Center of Sleep Medicine Excellence™.

OSMI has been conducting research since its inception, first under Dr. Helmut Schmidt and then under Dr. Markus Schmidt. Since 2015, Dr. Asim Roy has been the principal investigator for most of our research trials.

Our Research Staff

Asim Roy, MD is the medical director of the Ohio Sleep Medicine Institute. Board certified in sleep medicine and neurology, he works in close collaboration with health care providers to deliver continuous and coordinated sleep medicine care to adult and pediatric patients. Dr. Roy completed his neurology residency at Georgetown University as Chief Resident and his sleep and neurophysiology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Dr. Roy has been the principal investigator on dozens of research studies during his residency, fellowship, and as the medical director at OSMI.

Molly Hurley, CNP, participates in many of our trials as a sub-investigator. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Toledo. She completed her Family Nurse Practitioner Program at The Ohio State University. She draws her holistic approach to patient care from her previous work experiences in critical care, family medicine, and mental health.

Michelle Moffo is a research coordinator focusing on recruitment and device trials. She is a recent graduate of The Ohio State University with a degree in biology, and is remote-based in Sunbury.

Our Sleep Diagnostics Staff

Brittany Talbot conducts many of our daytime studies and oversees scoring.

Our team of overnight sleep technicians also includes Sam Dunham, Cameron Mohler, and Madison Wainwright.

Our Location

Ohio Sleep Medicine Institute conducts research visits and sleep diagnostic studies at our location in Dublin, Ohio, just outside Columbus. Our address is 4975 Bradenton Avenue, Dublin OH 43017. Our site has a six bed sleep diagnostic unit, patient exam rooms, meeting space, rooms for monitoring, and a double-locked, secured Schedule 1 drug closet. All equipment is professionally calibrated every year.

Our research equipment includes:

  • Double-locked, secure Schedule 1 drug closet with continuous temperature monitoring
  • Locked research office for equipment and document storage
  • Laboratory processing room with room temperature and refrigerated centrifuges
  • -80 freezer with continuous temperature monitoring
  • 12-lead ECG machine
  • BP cuffs, scale, stadiometer, and exam tables
  • Phlebotomy equipment

Our Research Systems

OSMI strives to conduct its research in as transparent and efficient a manner as possible, with as little paper as possible! We utilize several web-based systems to collect data, store and organize regulatory documentation, and document temperatures in our drug storage closet and freezer. Most source data verification and regulatory monitoring can be completed remotely.

  • Regulatory documentation is uploaded directly to Veeva SiteVault. Any documentation requiring wet-ink signatures is kept on site and re-scanned when updated, then uploaded to SiteVault for remote viewing. Some trials are also using eConsent through SiteVault.
  • Veeva SiteVault also holds our central binder, with all staff CVs, GCP training, medical licenses, and more available at all times and updated for all studies simultaneously. Facility level documentation such as CLIA waiver, DEA licenses, and accreditation documents are also available online.
  • Source documentation is collected directly into ClinicalResearch.io, and any paper documents generated during a visit such as laboratory requisitions or questionnaires are scanned and uploaded. All source is completely ALCOA compliant with timestamps and audit trails. Clinical documentation such as laboratory reports and ECG tracings are scanned or uploaded, and then reviewed and signed electronically within the system by a qualified provider.
  • Temperature logging is done through wireless, battery operated UbiBot thermometers, which log the temperature every 5 minutes and sends text and email alarms if the temperature exceeds pre-set limits.
  • Our contract negotiations are outsourced and generally have a 1-2 week turn around time. Budget negotiations are done in house. We are happy to start regulatory submissions before completing contract and budget if using the sponsor’s central IRB.
  • We are not required to use a local IRB or to submit contracts to any external hospital or administrative systems. We prefer to use WIRB or Advarra. Generally, we are able to review and internally approve studies quickly, and take about 4-6 weeks for full startup.
